Thunderbird 1.5 mail Client screen shots
Search

Typically it is assumed that the mail server is NOT working when more times than not it is the configuration on the mail client which is the cause of the issue. In this set of screen shots we will take you through Thunderbird 1.5 configuration.

Before this version of Thunderbird we did not offer any support as we felt its limitation with regard to outbound mail server settings did not make it a proper mail client. We are happy that they finally grew up and made this a great free alternative to outlook.

  Add New Account
It is amazing that so many people cannot seem to figure out even the simplest of interfaces. Thunderbird while it is a good mail client it is not the simplest of interfaces. If you need help then these shots are exactly what you need. If you do not then please just go do it.

Hit the add account button just as you did with the first account if this is the first account the procedure is still add account.

  New Account Setup

In this part of the wizard we are defining what we are going to setup. Email, RSS & Blogs, and newsgroup are the options. We are going to do a mail account with these shots so that is what is selected.

 Account ID

I am using a fake account here Cringley @ You use your account whatever@domainname.com

Your name can be John Doe it does not need to be the account name.

Your email address has to be your complete email logon address whatever@domainname.com

  Account Name

Again you can name this any friendly name you chose it has little to no baring on the function on the server Identity.

 Server Information
These settings are typically Pop as your choice I am using Imap so that Imap users can also be informed at the same time.

A pop account down loads your mail from the mail server to your desktop and an IMAP account only downloads the headers and leaves the mail on the server.

  User Name

The user name in this dialog refers to what the server knows the identity of your mail account to be.

You will see you the warning here about outbound and though Thunderbird did manage to use multiple outbound SMTP servers this has not really been integrated into the wizard in a smooth way. Better than the earlier versions though at least it does offer the option.

  Congrats screen

This part of the wizard indicates the settings you have actually created with the wizard note all these as you may be wrong and have to reconfigure.

Also you will note that by default it has the outgoing mail server incorrectly associated to the default mail account. This is the next part of the shots.

  Outgoing Server SMTP settings.

We will now go back to account settings and add an outgoing SMTP server to the list.

Just click the add button and make sure the outgoing mail server is selected in the left pane.

  Define the SMTP server

In the other examples the user name is cringely going to use the same outbound settings as the inbound they only have to be set exactly the same and if your ISP has a gateway you go around that by using a different port.

I have set this dialog to use port 366 as the same example of getting around a gateway imposed by your connection provider controlling access on port 25.

  Account Settings Out

This is a very important step though we created a outbound server we have not associated it to anything.

From the drop-down we select the account we just created and in the left pain and we selected the account we wanted to associate it to it is that simple really not hard at all.
