Note: To use the domain spam filter you must be the domain administrator. The hierarchy of the filter will relate to all the users of your domain. The software weighs these rules as the highest level after content rules. Doing this effort server side removes the need of downloading unwanted emails. Many people do this with client filters but server filters are more efficient, since it removes the need to download the email in the first place.

There are many reasons for using a domain spam rules as the first rule you create. This means that all users can be protected by the rule.  Example: if you wish to white list specific domains or email uses so they do not get tagged as spam just add the names of domains you consider trusted here and they will not be tagged as spam. Using the Domain Spam Filter rules otherwise, are much the same as per user rules.

This is typically required as the software is learning what users you communicate with. As a user you can also do this per user add white list any email domain or user as well. Though this method of simply adding your trusted domains in the beginning at the domain level is very productive.

Note: Too many administrators think that this is used to stop the machine from stamping spam in the subject, though it defeats the purpose of spam filtering.  The server can be more effective than any client side software on the market. Think about it. All mails trapped, do not have to be addressed or downloaded by the mail client. You can still use both.

The correct use of overriding the defaults is after you are comfortable with your settings but wish more granularity.  We do not recommend that you change the weights as they are proven values.

Overriding default spam settings

Low: In the low probability we are just stamping the word spam which means it will be downloaded if you are using pop 3 protocol. Though you can create a rule in your mail client that moves it to a spam folder on your desktop for recovery of false positives. This is the most used method after your account has been running on the server for sometime.

Medium: In the medium probability we are dropping it in a folder on the Junk Email folder on the server. You only have to go to the server in the web interface to recover these if you suspect a valid email as dropped there. Again this is all typically done after you have been on the server for sometime and it has learned your senders.

High: We are trashing high spam, these are based on the weights defined that we suggested you do not mess with. These are proven dynamic spam and open relay lists and Bayesian filters which have proven value.
